The Color Run Tuscaloosa Kickoff Press Conference: 9/04/12
It’s the happiest 5k race in the world, and it is coming to Sokol Park and Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday, October 6th, 2012. It’s The Color Run, and for those unfamiliar with the event, a demonstration and press conference was held today on the grounds of the Tuscaloosa Tourism and Sports Commission.
A group of volunteers assembled today to stage a mock running for the assembled media. They happily ran as other volunteers tossed paint packets onto them to showcase the appealing visual effects the race can produce. The smiles on the runners faces also showcased one of the main aspects of the event. A question and answer session was then held where other aspects of the race were discussed. A good portion dealt with the fact that Read, Bama, Read, an organization designed to help libraries damaged by the April 27th tornado, will be the main charity of the race.
The Color Run, which was first run in Austin, Texas, is an untimed 5k race where runners, clad in white t-shirts, are covered with a powdered paint substance, actually corn starch and food coloring, as they complete the course. It’s designed to be a non-competitive race that focuses instead on having a good time with friends and family. In fact, the two rules of The Color Run are to wear a white t-shirt and to have a smile on your face.
The Tuscaloosa race won’t be the first one held in Alabama. Birmingham played host to The Color Run on Labor Day, and it drew 10,000 participants to the Barber Motorsports complex. The anticipated number of participants for the Tuscaloosa is around 5,000, but that could easily be topped due to the number of students and fitness minded people in the community.
